Graphic design is no longer something only a select group of artists have access to.
Anybody can learn reasonably easy software and make amazing graphics. From cool looking flyers, to detailed gig posters, awesome and useful designs can be made at home by anyone with an ounce of artistry in them.
A lot of musicians, are turning to making their own graphics. It is a lot nicer to make your own art rather than pay somebody else to do something you may not even like! Even if it doesn’t come easy to you, learning graphic design is well worth the time and money! So here are 5 reasons it is a great idea for people in the music industry to learn about graphic design.
If you don’t know how to do any graphic design of your own, you obviously have to pay somebody else to do it, right? Well if you know how to do it yourself, you can save a TON of money. If you are worried about the cost of software versus the cost of paying somebody else to do it, check out something like Adobe Creative Cloud. If that is still too much and your looking for something cheaper (like free) check out Gimp it’s a lot harder to learn and can’t do as much, but it’s free.
A big part of what makes a good artist when it comes to things like gig posters or album covers, is understanding the meaning and feelings behind a band’s music. Nobody understands you or your band as well as yourself. So if you get reasonably good at graphic design, you can really nail your band’s signature sound, but visually.
Taking out the middleman when it comes to graphics can really boost your potential for lots of publicity. Say you get a gig filling in for a band that couldn’t make it to some show that’s coming to town, chances are, you aren’t going to find somebody to help you get some flyers out quickly enough to matter. If you know how to do it yourself, you can bust out a decent design and get your posters, or whatever it may be, out and seen as soon as possible.
It takes a lot of time getting somebody to make a good album cover or flyer. First you have to find somebody to do the work, then meet with them, then finally (assuming the first option seems like a good fit) wait and hope he/she gets the work done in time. If you learn graphic design and do it yourself, there is no time waiting to find somebody, no time waiting for the work to be done. Plus, even if you are learning along the way, somebody who is genuinely motivated to do something can do it a lot better than somebody only motivated by money.
If it turns out you really like graphic design and you are pretty good at it, it can turn into a really good career! Whether you need money to eat while your waiting for your chance to go big, or you have been there and done that, it is a great thing to make money off of. You can turn into that guy everybody is looking for to do they’re gig posters. Or you could just sell some stuff on stock photo websites for use in other projects to make some extra cash!
These are just a few reasons among many that graphic design is a great thing for a music proffesional to know about. Whether it is just how to put some text together to make a flyer, or a detailed piece of art, making your own graphics is a useful skill.
