Inspiring and Creative Map Designs
Whether you are a travel addict, planning a trip to see Great Great Granny Smith, or a businessman advertising locations, maps are part of our lives almost daily. It’s no surprise that graphic designers and artists love to put there own style into them!
I have loved maps since I was a little kid, sometimes I’d be digging through ski brochures looking for trail maps to study, other times I would be comparing touristy table-mat maps to real maps for accuracy. Maps can be a great artistic tool, like in these topographic map designs, but most of the time they serve a purpose rather than as a medium in a design. I’m sure all of us have seen business cards with a tradition black and white map complete with a large star on the back! Nowadays, it is common to find very intricately designed and sometimes interactive maps embeded into web designs, and oftentimes similar to the traditional example but with a little more flair.
So here are some examples of inspiring map designs I found along interwebs!
These minimalist designs are my favorite when it comes to a more artistic map interpretation, especially the transit maps! I may have to order a couple of these myself! The first map is perfect for a modern business or restraunt that wants to get there loacation out there in style! Great use of negative space and limited colors.
I’ve seen lots of maps that go along with these type designs. Generally they are very colorful and hint towards the “flat” trend. This style of map yields much more information than you can typically get out of a minimalist map, but they tend to be more general rather than an accurate guide from point A to point B, so they may not always be the best route.
So there you have it! Hopefully these spiked some creative ideas for you next project involving maps! I only highlighted a few styles here but there is loads of great stuff out there! Especially vintage looking maps. A lot of the old ones are even in the public domain!
